Regenerative Design Framework

A design framework for digital platforms that regenerate rather than extract — grounded in living systems theory, commons governance, indigenous epistemology, regenerative economics, and the Greenpill ecosystem. Green Goods is the first platform to formalize and operationalize these principles.

No authoritative digital regenerative design framework exists yet. The DRS 2026 conference hosts the first dedicated academic track. This document is our contribution — synthesizing 11 intellectual traditions into 7 actionable design principles for regenerative digital platforms.


The Seven Principles

1. Make the Mycelium Visible

Show value flows end-to-end. In mycorrhizal networks, fungi redistribute nutrients between trees through underground connections — Mother Trees share resources with seedlings, flows shift seasonally toward need, and fungi actively move phosphorus from resource-rich to resource-poor patches (Simard, 2016; Current Biology, 2019).

Green Goods implements mycorrhizal patterns: operators route verification to where it's needed (Mother Trees), more verified work attracts more funding (reciprocal reward), resources flow preferentially within gardens (kin recognition), conviction voting shifts allocation to current need (seasonal rebalancing), and vault yield routes from funders to garden operations (inequality-responsive redistribution).

The design principle: A forest floor is opaque. A digital platform doesn't have to be. Show gardeners the full chain from their photo to the funding it attracted. Show funders the chain from their deposit to specific verified impact. Name the MycoFi patterns: endosymbiotic finance, funder-builder intimacy, permaculture currencies.

2. Design for Succession

Platform communities follow ecological succession stages. A pioneer garden needs different features than a climax garden — just as lichens colonizing bare rock need different conditions than a mature forest canopy.

This maps to the Greenpill chapter maturity model (L0 nascent → L1 social → L2 internal web3 → L3 community deployment) and to Octalysis motivation phases (Discovery → Onboarding → Scaffolding → Endgame). Progressive disclosure should follow succession stages, not arbitrary complexity tiers.

3. Enrich the Edges

In ecology, transition zones between ecosystems (ecotones) exhibit the greatest biodiversity and productivity. The mangrove (land/sea) and reef (coral/ocean) are among the most generative systems on Earth. The same applies to stakeholder boundaries in digital platforms.

The design principle: Invest disproportionate design attention at these boundaries. Don't smooth them over — enrich them.

4. Failure is Succession

Ecosystems don't prevent failure — they prepare for it as a generative event. The Lodgepole Pine carries serotinous cones that open only during fire. A machine breaks and stops. An ecosystem burns and succeeds — pioneer species colonize the cleared ground.

When a work submission is rejected, the interface should treat this as clearing — showing what the operator saw, what could improve, and what past successful submissions looked like. When connectivity is lost, design for dormancy, not error. When an operator leaves, design for secondary succession (faster than primary because infrastructure persists). On-chain attestation history means a community's evidence survives platform disruption.

The design principle: Frame all "negative" states as opportunities with context. Rejection = clearing. Disconnection = dormancy. Disturbance = renewal.

5. Be Growth-Agnostic

Kate Raworth's Doughnut Economics argues for economies that thrive whether or not they grow. Post-growth HCI (ACM TOCHI, 2023) challenges the assumption that more usage is always better. Most digital platforms are designed around growth metrics (DAU, engagement, retention). A regenerative platform measures impact depth, not engagement breadth.

A garden sustaining 15 gardeners doing consistent verified work is successful. Design for plateau, not just growth. Never send re-engagement notifications. No streaks. No FOMO. Celebrate task completion and departure: "Your work is queued. Go plant another tree."

The design principle: Measure what matters — verified impact per unit of gardener effort — not what's easy to count. A platform's maturity is inversely proportional to its need for engagement hacks.

6. Capability is the Deliverable

The deliverable of regenerative design is capability — the power to evolve from understanding. Not engagement, not retention, not DAU. Every motivation design choice must pass the eudaimonic test: does this build the community's ability to do regenerative work independently?

This draws on Sebastian Deterding's eudaimonic design (motivation for flourishing, not extraction), Self-Determination Theory (autonomy, competence, relatedness), and the Octalysis framework's White Hat drives (Epic Meaning, Development, Creativity & Feedback) over Black Hat drives (Scarcity, Unpredictability, Loss).

Recognition badges mark capability transitions ("Can independently assess soil health," "Has trained 3 new gardeners"), not activity volume ("100 submissions"). The Endgame is community self-sufficiency, not user retention. Success = how little the community needs the platform. This is the Walkaway Test from the Ethereum Foundation Mandate, formalized as a design principle.

7. Regen, Not Degen

The Greenpill movement draws a sharp line between degenerative crypto (extraction, speculation, addiction) and regenerative crypto (coordination, impact, flourishing). This distinction must be expressed in every visual and interaction design choice. It is not branding — it is a philosophical statement about what kind of relationship between humans and technology the platform embodies.

Theoretical Foundations

Living Systems Theory (Capra)

Three criteria of living systems: autopoiesis (self-making — the community produces the structures it needs through its own activity), dissipative structures (order maintained through continuous energy flow — attention, labor, expertise, capital, knowledge), and cognition (Santiago Theory — organisms don't process information, they bring forth a world). Design for world-making, not information-processing.

Commons Governance (Ostrom)

Elinor Ostrom's 8 design principles for managing commons — clearly defined boundaries, rules fitting local conditions, collective-choice arrangements, monitoring, graduated sanctions, conflict resolution, rights to organize, and nested enterprises. Green Goods implements most of these through Hats Protocol roles, per-garden config, conviction voting, operator review, and ERC-6551 tokenbound accounts. Identified gap: conflict resolution workflows (Principle 6).

Regenerative Development (Regenesis Group)

Mang & Reed's "Story of Place" methodology — understanding place as a living entity with essence and vocation, then designing for co-evolution. Adapted for digital communities: "place" becomes plural and distributed; each garden has its own narrative identity, not just configuration data.

Biomimicry (Benyus)

Three levels: form (visual metaphor — where most digital biomimicry stalls), process (self-assembly, self-repair, bottom-up growth), and ecosystem (is this platform part of a nourishing food web?). The Life's Principles framework (26 auditable sub-principles) provides a concrete design audit tool.

Indigenous Design Epistemologies

Aboriginal Australian "Country" as living design partner (Alison Page). Te Aranga Maori Design Principles (7 principles from Mana to Ahi Ka). Two-Eyed Seeing / Etuaptmumk (Elder Albert Marshall — using both Indigenous and Western knowledge at full strength). The Honorable Harvest (Robin Wall Kimmerer — ask permission, take only what you need, give a gift in return). These frameworks center relationships and reciprocity over extraction and efficiency. All cited works are published by their indigenous authors for wider engagement.

Regenerative Economics (Raworth)

Doughnut Economics' social foundation and ecological ceiling. The Amsterdam City Doughnut's four-lens model (local-social, local-ecological, global-social, global-ecological) as a template for garden-level impact portraits. Platform cooperativism (Scholz) — value flows through and around to all participants, not up and out to investors.

The Meta-Crisis (Schmachtenberger)

Daniel Schmachtenberger's metacrisis framework identifies generator functions — underlying dynamics producing all individual crises. Three root generators: rivalrous dynamics (races to the bottom), substrate destruction (ecological and epistemic degradation), and exponential technology (multiplying destructive capacity without corresponding wisdom growth). The core mechanism is multipolar traps: game-theoretic situations where rational self-interest leads to collective destruction. Scott Alexander named this dynamic "Moloch" in "Meditations on Moloch" (2014). Ameen Soleimani named MolochDAO (2019) after the concept. Owocki elevated "Slaying Moloch" to the Greenpill movement's central metaphor. Liv Boeree's Win-Win podcast popularized the framing beyond crypto.

Schmachtenberger appeared on the Greenpill Podcast three times — #26 The Metacrisis, #32 Superstructures, and #84 MetacrisisDAO — forming the intellectual backbone of the show's civilizational framing.

Schmachtenberger's third attractor — neither collapse (catastrophe attractor) nor totalitarian control (dystopia attractor), but new coordination forms that make both obsolete — maps directly to Ostrom's empirical finding that communities can self-govern commons without privatization or central control. Green Goods is a coordination mechanism: Hats Protocol makes roles transparent (defection has social cost), EAS attestations create permanent records (cooperation compounds), conviction voting enables community-controlled allocation (the third way between top-down control and uncoordinated free-for-all), and the Hypercert pipeline makes the feedback loop explicit (document → verify → certify → fund → repeat).

Motivation Design (Octalysis Reconceived)

Yu-kai Chou's 8 Core Drives, filtered through Deterding's eudaimonic design critique and Self-Determination Theory. White Hat drives (Epic Meaning, Development, Creativity) serve regenerative ends. Black Hat drives (Scarcity, Unpredictability, Loss) are replaced with natural ecological rhythms. The critical insight: gamification for capability is legitimate; gamification for dependency is extractive.

Greenpill

Kevin Owocki's GreenPilled (2022) — coordination failure is the root problem; blockchain enables novel mechanism design for large-scale coordination; impact = profit through incentive restructuring; Eight Forms of Capital (Landua) beyond financial metrics; ImpactDAOs as atomic building blocks.

MycoFi

Jeff Emmett & Jessica Zartler's mycorrhizal finance patterns — permaculture currencies (diverse, localized, vs. monoculture), endosymbiotic finance (internal yield generation), trust-based flows (persistent relationships, not transactional), funder-builder intimacy, non-linear distribution. These formalize the biological mycorrhizal research into crypto-economic design patterns.

Solarpunk

"We are solarpunks because optimism has been taken away from us and we are trying to take it back." Design principles: scaffolding for growth (temporary structures enabling organic development), local shared experiences, more-than-human design, human autonomy, multi-worldviews, pull over push. Cosmo-localization: "Design and share globally. Make locally."
