Join a Garden

A new gardener meeting community members beside raised beds
Gardener chapter

First confirm the garden, then join from the app.

What this helps you do

Join the garden where your work belongs so its actions appear in the app and your submissions can be reviewed by the right operators.

Open gardens can be joined directly. Restricted gardens do not show a join button until an operator invites or adds you.

Before you start

  • Sign in with the passkey or wallet address you plan to keep using.
  • Make sure you are online. Joining a garden is an on-chain action.
  • If you are using an external wallet, keep a little gas available on the target chain.
  • If someone sent you a public garden link, open Join this Garden and sign in when prompted. After login, the app takes you to the authenticated garden page.

Step-by-step flow

  1. 1

    Open your gardens list

In the app, open Profile and find the Gardens section. It lists gardens you already belong to and open gardens you can join.

  2. 2

    Pick the right garden

Check the name and location before joining. Garden actions, operators, and work history are scoped to that garden.

  3. 3

    Tap Join

For an open garden, tap Join, review the confirmation, and sign the transaction. Passkey users use their smart account; wallet users sign with their connected wallet.

  4. 4

    Confirm membership

After the transaction starts, the garden shows as joined in the app. Indexer updates can take a moment, so refresh if the status looks stale.

  5. 5

    Open the garden

Go to the garden page and check the Work tab. If active actions are available, you are ready to submit work.

Open vs restricted gardens

If: The garden has an open joining policy

Do: Join directly from Profile or from the authenticated garden page.

Then: Open the garden's Work tab and pick an active action.

If: The garden has a restricted joining policy

Do: Ask the garden operator to add you. The app will not show a direct join path.

Then: Once added, the garden appears in your app and its actions become available.

If: A public garden link sent you here

Do: Use the public page's Join this Garden button. If you are signed out, login redirects you back to the garden.

Then: Finish the join from the authenticated app page.

How to know it worked

  • The garden appears in your Profile gardens list.
  • The garden page no longer shows the join action for your account.
  • The Work tab shows actions you can submit against, if the operator has active actions configured.
  • If the app still looks unchanged right after signing, refresh once. The transaction may have confirmed before the indexer caught up.

If something goes wrong

  • No Join button. The garden may be restricted, you may already be a member, or you may be signed out.
  • Transaction fails. Check the wallet message. Common causes are the wrong chain, no gas for an external wallet, or a garden that is no longer open for joining.
  • Joined but still not showing. Refresh the app. The join is optimistic first and then confirmed by the garden indexer.
  • Wrong garden. Contact the operator before submitting work. Your submissions should be tied to the garden that will review them.

Best practices

  • Confirm the garden location and operator before joining if several gardens have similar names
  • When joining a restricted garden, reach out to the operator directly and share the address you use in Green Goods
  • You can belong to multiple gardens at once — each garden tracks your contributions independently
  • Check a garden's active actions before joining to make sure it matches your interests and availability
